It’s been six months since Sir Roy Anderson took the helm of Imperial College, so to give you the opportunity to get to know Imperial’s new Rector, we asked readers of the alumni e-bulletin to submit their questions for Sir Roy. You’ll find answers to what he considers his most important research result, why he took Imperial’s top job, how the College plans to weather the current financial crisis and more on pages 16–19.

To give you a real flavour of the work that’s happening here at Imperial, we’ll be interviewing a different academic from across the College each issue so that they can explain in their own words the exciting research they’re leading. We start the series with the Department of Earth Science and Engineering’s Professor Mark Sephton who is one of a multinational team involved in the next European-led exploration mission to Mars. He explains how the team will look for life on Mars, and how they’ll know if they find it, on pages 20 and 21.

You’ll find all this and much more inside the pages of Imperial Matters, so what are you waiting for? Get reading!
